Brazilian Blowouts and Brazilian straightening are banned at my salon because of safety and liability concerns.
There's no system that just makes your hair perfect. Well, maybe it would be better if I just got it cut for a straighter style and you could show me how to blow dry and style it so that I have slight curl and a much more groomed look? I need to "dress the part" for work and that means changing this hippy ass hair-do I've had going on for years. I know you probably are booked forever but if I'm going to start taking the time to blow dry and/or use rollers in my hair every other day, I want a good cut and I want it done right. I trust you with my hair so would you be willing to help me make the transformation?

Many of my recent projects have been long-term developments that have involved more than a couple of months of legwork and negotiations to deliver. While these wrap up and become finalized, I felt that I needed to break my silence to broadcast an update.

In the past couple of months, I have wrangled in a new product line for Chakras that I'm very proud of and love to get my hands into. Sachajuan is the burgeoning styling family that hails from Stockholm, Sweden. I've been on a quest to discover a fully functioning and unique range of shampoos, treatments and shapers that are user friendly, forgiving for novices, and approachable for a wide range of guests. In addition, I sought a line that was corporate-free and filled a unique niche within an indie salon environment. I think I've got a keeper- more to come on this partnership.

July was a busy month for me with a lot of travel. This marked the invitation to Bumble and Bumble's skills review for the upcoming 2010 fashion Week in New York. I had the pleasure of working with Sabrina Michaels and Bronwen to hone and polish my styling skills to ensure my readiness for backstage. I look forward to being a part of the B&b team for some exciting shows this year.

With the recent transitions made by Bumble and Bumble, I have decided to reach out to B&b's president, Peter Lichtenthal for a one-on-one conversation about how his decisions will affect our current salon culture and the relationship between stylists and their clientele. He has generously agreed to meet with me at the House of Bumble to address my questions and concerns stemming from the recent announcement of a partnership with beauty retail giant, Sephora. This joint venture plans to broaden B&b's exposure to the consumer market, while stimulating new referrals to selected Bumble network affiliates. The question is, how will this affect B&b's heritage and mission? What impact will this have on the independent retailer that must now compete with B&b directly online and in mass retail? Look for the full interview on Hairistocracy.com.

I've spent the past two days at Ion Studio in Soho mastering the technique of the precision ponytail. Often overlooked, this is the structural foundation for many other styles, as well being the platform for a classic simple finish. Getting perfectly even tension and a smooth polish is the key to making this style flawless to the camera lens for print and runway. Nestled quietly amongst residential and commercial interests with miniscule signage, 21 Mercer is easily overlooked. As you enter, there are modest amounts of unadorned sportswear and athletic shoes with an overwhelming emphasis on black tones. Speakers blast classic hip hop and grunge to keep out the uninvited. When recognized as a client with an appointment, I was whisked back to the back where everything changes.

Entering the design room, I'm ushered through the smoked glass sliding privacy doors into the comfy haven of plush leather sofas with sneakerhead coffee table books. The music is different here, as is the lighting. The push of a button starts the mechanical hum of the automated skylights filling the room with abundant natural light. The tunes are subdued and the tone is serious. Sneaker design is no joke.

Voodoo Ray fanned out a collection of swatch materials for the exclusive Air Force One chassis that is only available through the 21 Mercer location. Some are natural, some are not. The variety of textures and colors is blindingly overwhelming, but Ray seems to know how to make it all flow. My original design evolved tremendously from start to finish as we combined creative forces to merge my imagination and his experience. We formed a symbiotic design formula and created a shoe that is a modern interpretation on classic colorways. Monochromatic made multifaceted by contrasting textures and subtle humor. The shoe is called "Hairistocracy" and will commemorate the launch of my sister site. The space was minimalist and utilitarian and cleanly served its intended purpose. Everything was neatly arranged and free of clutter. The front desk was exceptionally enthusiastic when greeting me and I was made to feel very comfortable without being corralled. The music was eclectic and irreverent with a volume level set right at "fun". Retail was organized and diverse, and featured a variety of products that you don't find at most apothecaries and salons.
